I'm getting a lot of Undeliverable mail bounces showing the From
address as our mail server's "MAILER-DAEMON"

Should I be concerned? Is there a server setting I should implement
to prevent this?

There are some out there who would claim this is broken behavior,
but I don't agree.

I would say that whenever possible, the receiving MTA should reject the
message at the SMTP level, but there are cases where this is impossible.

Make sure that the domain setting "mail to unknown names is" set to "rejected"
"accepted and bounced" will cause unknown user rejects to be separate messages
from mailer-daemon instead of smtp level error.

Things like account over quota will still be a mailer-daemon message

Thanks for the tip. Our 'problem' domain's Mail to Unknown Name was
set to Accepted and Bounced. Now changed to 'rejected'. We will see
if this helps!

It is possible your domain name is being used as the return address on
spam or virus spam emails - the bounces are because the destination
names are madeup

You could reduce the scope of the problem by using spf and/or domain
keys but this is likely to only slightly reduce the issue because so
few servers implement these standards.

That would not result in undeliverable mail notices with mailer-***@his-domain
as the from address
